A man has died from a shooting in Smithfield on Saturday morning.

<b>SMITHFIELD, N.C.</b> — A man has died from a shooting in Smithfield on Saturday morning.

Officers said the shooting occurred along Harris Street around 5:30. Frank Blackshell was killed.

Neighbors told police they heard what sounded like gunfire and saw a car race through the area. Authorities are investigating the shooting as a homicide.

Officers discovered the suspect(s) had already left the area when they arrived. Several shots were also fired into a home.

Blackshell, 60, was taken to WakeMed hospital before he passed away.

The 12-year-old boy had been required to sleep in a tube-like tent, enclosed by a solid plastic sheet. Upon discovering that the zipper for the tent was broken, the report says, "staff needed a zip tie out of the tool bag."

According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, a school resource officer discovered the body of a man inside a vehicle at Hobbton Middle School athletic field. Authorities believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
