MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — One man died Thursday after a tree fell on a home in Mount Airy, WXII reports. It's the first known weather-related death since heavy rains soaked North Carolina this week.

John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services, said it happened around 5 a.m. on the 100 block of Boeing Lane in Mount Airy.

The tree fell on the home near a bedroom, according to Shelton.

Shelton said the 20-year-old man's body has been recovered.

Contractors will arrive Friday to start moving debris and assess the damage.

The identity of the man has not yet been released.

Western North Carolina saw the worst of severe weather this week, but several trees fell in the Triangle due to breezy conditions and saturated roads.

Water rescues and landslides were reported in the mountains on Wednesday.
