CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The friends of a man shot in Chapel Hill earlier this month said he has died from his injuries.

Elyjah Smith was shot on July 11 at an apartment complex just after 9 p.m.

Smith's roommate said the shooting stemmed from an argument in the parking lot. He said his friend caught someone in the parking lot trying to steal a car or parts of a car. He approached them and an argument began.

As Smith was walking back inside, he was shot four times near the doorway of his apartment. The friend said he witnessed the shooting.

On July 15, Kemonnie Drequan Roma, 27, of Charlotte was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury in connection to the shooting. It was unknown if charges would be upgraded following Smith's death.
