Man dies after being punched at Beaufort County bar

A man was killed in an altercation at a bar in eastern North Carolina on Saturday morning.

CHOCOWINITY, N.C. — A man was killed in an altercation at a bar in eastern North Carolina on Saturday morning.

Beaufort County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Beavers Dam bar off Business Highway 17 around 2 a.m. Authorities found a 51-year-old man unresponsive. Tracy Herman of Soper, Oklahoma, was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS personnel tried to revive Herman, but were unsuccessful.

Deputies learned a man knocked out Herman after punching him in the head in the midst of an argument. Deputies said Mark Campbell III hit Herman several more times after he was unconscious. Campbell left the bar before turning himself in.

Campbell, 30, was charged with one count of murder and is being held without bond.

Herman's body was sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
