NEW BERN, N.C. — A Craven County Sheriff's Deputy and the person who is suspected of shooting him were rushed to the hospital Friday night.

Sheriff Chip Hughes said they were sent to a home on Crooked Run Drive on Friday night for a wellness check and to serve commitment papers. Officials said a family called for deputies to check on a man who lived in the home.

Authorities said that when deputies arrived on the scene, the man they were there to check on opened fire and hit a deputy. Two other deputies returned fire, officials said, and the man eventually left his home after being injured.

The deputy was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville after being shot and is facing life-threatening injuries. The suspected shooter was shot multiple times by deputies and taken into custody.

Hughes told WITN he is grateful that officers were able to get the situation under control quickly with no additional injuries.
