RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police said that a 21-year-old man was critically injured in a wreck that closed part of Wade Avenue in Raleigh early Thursday.

Matthew Lawrence Weidner lost control of a 1999 Audi traveling east on Wade Avenue, near Dixie Trail, around 2 a.m., police said. The Audi ran off the road, struck and broke a utility pole, hit a tree and then overturned.

Weidner, who was the only one in the car, was taken to WakeMed, where he was listed in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

Police said they suspect alcohol was a factor in the wreck and expect to file charges.

Wade Avenue was closed between Dixie Trail and Brooks Avenue for about six hours after the wreck. Progress Energy crews replaced the power pole.
