RALEIGH, N.C. — A man walking in the travel lane of eastbound Interstate 40 was killed Wednesday afternoon when he was hit by a car. No charges are planned against the driver.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Stephen Ray Liles, 38, of Princeton, climbed over a construction barrier around 3 p.m. and walked into the road.

He was hit in the right lane, near the interchange with Interstate 440 southeast of downtown Raleigh.

Authorities don't know why Liles was in the road.

Traffic was detoured onto U.S. Highway 70 for about an hour and a half as the evening rush began, causing backups that stretched for miles to east Raleigh.
