Man charged with murder of unborn child after Nash County chase

A man has been charged with murder of an unborn child and other offenses after a police chase in early January.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A man has been charged with murder of an unborn child and other offenses after a police chase in early January.

According to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, James Dylan Harris, 26, of Tarboro, led deputies on a high-speed chase in Rocky Mount on Jan. 9. Several warrants were out for Harris' arrest when deputies spotted him in a tan GMC Yukon.

Harris led deputies on a chase in the Jeffreys Road area at speeds of 80-95 mph in a 30-45 mph zone. Deputies said Harris was driving in a careless and reckless manner and that he ran several stoplights during the chase.

When Harris' car hit a tree, deputies discovered two other people -- Ashley Howell and Tyler Newton -- inside. Both were transported to local hospitals with injuries.

Howell, who was 30 weeks pregnant, had emergency surgery at Vidant Hospital in Greenville, but her unborn child died.

Harris was being held in the Nash County Jail under a $646,000 secured bond. His charges include murder of an unborn child, careless and reckless driving, driving while impaired, felony elude arrest, felony serious injury by vehicle, cyberstalking, communicating threats and assault of an individual with a disability.
