WILSON, N.C. — A Wilson man was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder in connection with the death of man who was beaten last summer, authorities said.

Troy Lee Newsome Jr., 20, was arrested Tuesday morning at an apartment on Nealshire Drive, authorities said. Wilson police officers and agents of the U.S. Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Task Force participated in the arrest.

Three men assaulted James Earl Hines on Aug. 11 in Wilson, beating him so severely that he needed to be hospitalized, authorities said. Hines died of his injuries on Feb. 17.

Newsome was arrested shortly after the attack, was charged with assault inflicting serious injury, and was released on bond.

The other two men originally charged in the assault were already in custody on unrelated charges, authorities said.
