CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Chapel Hill police say a 40-year-old man was drunk when he hit an elderly pedestrian on West Franklin Street, drove away from the scene and tried to flee from police late Wednesday night.

Police said a black SUV driven by Cole Andrew Buchman hit Earl Greer as he was crossing at 409 W. Franklin St. shortly before midnight.

Greer, 65, was treated at UNC Hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries. He was listed in fair condition Thursday afternoon.

Shortly after, police spotted the vehicle near Market Street, in the Meadowmont area. Buchman refused to halt and only stopped when he was blocked in by officers, police said. He later refused to submit to a breath test.

Buchman, of 122 Mallard Court, was charged with DWI, felony hit and run, driving with a revoked license, failing to stop for an accident and fleeing to elude arrest. He was placed in the Orange County Jail under a $500 secured bond.
