Man charged in shooting death of Robeson County 5-year-old

A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged Friday with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a 5-year-old in Red Springs.

RED SPRINGS, N.C. — A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged Friday with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a 5-year-old in Red Springs.

Alva Paisley Oxendine Jr., 5, of Red Springs, was shot Wednesday during a fight between multiple people, authorities said. Oxendine was shot while sitting inside in the back seat of his mother’s car. Oxendine’s brother was also in the back seat at the time, authorities said.

Oxendine was taken to Southeastern Medical Center and died from his injuries.

The two groups had fought earlier during the day and agreed to met to fight a second time, authorities said.

Donovan Travale Locklear, 24

Donovan Travale Locklear, 24, of Red Springs, is charged with second-degree murder and was being held in the Robeson County Detention Center under a $500,000 secured bond.

He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday.
