SANFORD, N.C. — A Sanford man was charged Friday with burglarizing five local churches since last fall, police said.

Erik John Berglund, 27, of 1424 Carthage St., was charged with four counts of breaking and entering a place of worship, three counts each of felony larceny and possessing stolen goods and one count of damage to real property. He was being held in the Lee County jail under a $45,000 bond.

Officers responded to an alarm at St. Stephens Catholic Church, at 901 N. Franklin Drive, early Friday and found Berglund in some nearby woods, police said. Property taken from the church was recovered.

Other local churches were burglarized between late October and late January, police said.
