CLINTON, N.C. — A pickup driver was charged with reckless driving after his truck became wedged underneath a tractor-trailer early Wednesday, police said.

The accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. near the intersection of Five Bridge Road and N.C. Highway 421 North in Clinton.

Kenneth Kornegay was trying to turn his tractor-trailer around in a driveway when he saw a pickup approaching, police said. He pulled back into the driveway to let the pickup pass, but the pickup driver braked too hard and lost control of his vehicle, slamming into the semi, police said.

The pickup driver, Bradley Gainey, 21, of Autryville, was taken by helicopter to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he was listed in stable condition Wednesday evening.

Kornegay was uninjured in the incident.
