DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a break-in last week in which a woman in her 70s was nearly sexually assaulted, authorities said.

Tyrell Alexander, 25, of 3817 Freeman Road, was charged with first-degree burglary, kidnapping, attempted second-degree rape, assault on a female, larceny after breaking and entering and interfering with emergency communication. He remains in the Durham County jail.

The break-in occurred on Jan. 29 in the 3800 block of Valleydale Drive.

Authorities said Alexander targeted the woman, watching her in her home before entering through an unlocked bedroom window. The woman told investigators he tried to sexually assault her, but she was able to fight him off, and he then stole her purse and phone before fleeing.

The woman said her attacker referred to himself as a Peeping Tom, authorities said.
