ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — A man has been arrested and charged after a Black Lives Matter mural was damaged in Elizabeth City last weekend.

Jeremy Maggard was charged with injury to real property and reckless driving. Maggard, 32, was released after posting bond and has a court appearance for Aug. 26.

The mural was damaged in downtown Elizabeth City only one day after it was unveiled, according to a Facebook video posted Sunday.

Elizabeth City police reviewed nearby surveillance video, leading them to a black Dodge Ram, which police believe Maggard was driving.

Black skid marks were strewn across the mural in front of City Hall, according to photos from Little. The driver of the Dodge Ram, with blacked out tires, left the marks on Saturday afternoon.

Photos from police show the truck going back and forth over the mural, with smoke fuming from the back of the vehicle.

Since last summer, when Black Lives Matter street murals popped across the country, they have been vandalized by drivers. A large mural in downtown Charlotte was damaged by skid marks last June.

Glenda Thomas, nephew of Andrew Brown Jr., posted a video to her Facebook of the damage.

Thomas said in a Facebook video that "someone needs to be accountable for this."
