A man and a boy drowned in separate accidents.

Johnston County authorities said James Barbour Jr., 6, drowned in his grandparents' in-ground pool near Smithfield late Saturday afternoon. His grandparents and parents were home at the time of his death.

The pool was only half full because it wasn’t being used. The death was ruled an accident.

Garrick Sheffield, 35, drowned in the city of Rocky Mount's Tar River Reservoir in Nash County, police said. He had boat trouble Friday afternoon and decided to go for a swim while he waited for help, officials said. Police called it an accident.
