RALEIGH, N.C. — A man wanted for questioning in the disappearance of his wife fled from police across three counties on Wednesday afternoon and was eventually stopped and arrested in Raleigh.

Interstate 40 was shut down near Jones Sausage Road after the man fled into the woods nearby on foot.

The chase began with a 911 call from a Speedway gas station in Johnston County.

"The guy y'all been looking for on the news, driving the black Excursion, African-American guy, he just left the Speedway here in Four Oaks heading back towards Smithfield," the caller told dispatchers.

Carl Wiggins, husband of Kiara Wiggins, is a suspect in her disapperance.

Law enforcement officers chased the SUV into Sampson County, back into Johnston County, and then into Wake County. State Highway Patrol deployed several stop sticks and eventually the SUV swerved and crashed into a highway barrier south of downtown Raleigh.

Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton told WRAL News that the driver was Carl Wiggins who is believed to be connected to the disappearance of his wife, Kiara Rene Wiggins. The vehicle he was driving, a 2003 black Excursion, was stolen from Bladen County.

Kiara Wiggins, 38, has been missing since June 9. The Wigginses lived together in Roseboro and have been married for 12 years, according to Kiara Wiggins' family.

Family members are desperate for information about Kiara Wiggins. Her sister, Judy Murray, said it's not like her to leave suddenly and not be in touch with family members.

The only charge against Carl Wiggins is for theft of the SUV, according to Thornton. When investigators questioned him about his wife's whereabouts after his arrest, Thornton said, Wiggins was not cooperative.

A search of the vehicle after Carl Wiggins' arrest delayed the reopening of I-40 through Wednesday afternoon.

"I have seen a lot of stuff, a lot of crazy driving. I haven't seen an actual chase like that," a witness to the scene, Shane Delbridge said.

"I'm very happy that they caught him," he said.
