Man arrested in high-speed chase, crash that snarled traffic on US 1 near Cary

Timothy Ronald Cox II, 24, has been charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest. He was being held at the Wake County Detention Center in lieu of a $75,000 bond, and a magistrate judge on Thursday declined to lower based on the recommendations of prosecutors.

If convicted, Cox, who is originally from New Hampshire, could face up to 3 years in prison if convicted.

The two people who were hurt during the incident were rushed to WakeMed with serious injuries, according to Cary officials. Information about their conditions was pending.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office said a deputy was attempting to stop a speeding vehicle that was traveling over 100 mph. The deputy did not attempt to chase the vehicle because of traffic and the fact that the speeding vehicle was weaving among other cars, authorities said.

"The deputy quickly decided that it was unsafe to continue the pursuit and the motorist, it was alleged, was weaving in and out of traffic and that's when the accident occurred shortly thereafter," said Eric Curry, a spokesman with the Wake County Sheriff's Office.

The speeding car crashed into another vehicle moments after the deputy attempted the traffic stop, authorities said.

No law enforcement officer was involved in the wreck, according to Cary officials.

During his court appearance Thursday, prosecutors said Cox's vehicle was traveling as fast as 100 miles an hour and that Cox crashed into another vehicle on the side of the road,  seriously injuring one person.

One southbound lane of U.S. 1 reopened by about 6:30 p.m., and all lanes reopened at about 9:30 p.m.

Video of the scene from Sky 5 showed a massive traffic backup and several law enforcement officers on the scene.

At least two vehicles were badly damaged during the incident.
