CLINTON, N.C. — A man was arrested after taking deputies and troopers on a multi-county chase from rural Sampson County into Raleigh along Interstate 40 on Thursday night.

Around 8 p.m., Sampson County deputies tried to pull over a driver who was dangerously close to a tractor-trailer on U.S. 13 near Wrench Road.

The driver, Drew Smith, continued to turn onto U.S. 701 and then got on I-40 West. The driver didn't stop until getting to the Lake Wheeler Road exit in Raleigh. No one was hurt in the pursuit and Smith was taken into custody.

Smith, 32, was charged with following too closely, speeding, driving left of center, flee to elude arrest in a motor vehicle, driving while license revoked and reckless driving.

Authorities said the driver has a history of eluding law enforcement.
