Man arrested, charged with murder of Fayetteville toddler

Fayetteville police arrested and charged Keshawn Ayers, 26 on Friday night in connection to the murder of a 2-year-old, officials said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police arrested and charged Keshawn Ayers, 26, on Friday night in connection to the murder of a 2-year-old, officials said.

Police found the child unresponsive at a home on Malloy Street on New Year's Eve. First responders took the toddler to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center around 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 31. The medical examiner determined the death to be a homicide.

The death was Fayetteville's 48th homicide in 2021, breaking the record of 32 murders in 2016.

At the time, officials said that Ayers had custody of the child. Ayers is the toddler's mother's boyfriend, according to police.

Police called for help from the United States Marshals Service to arrest Ayers, according to officials.

He is facing charges of first degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious injury. Ayers is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond.
