MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — A Warsaw man was arrested on Saturday night after police say he hijacked a patrol car and led police on a high-speed chase.

Mount Olive police officers responded to a 911 call that a suspicious person was at Walmart. When they arrived at the scene, they found Edward Carter Batts.

Officials said that during the investigation, Batts ran away from officers, got into a patrol car and cued a high-speed chase.

One officer who was following Batts on Interstate 40 lost control of her vehicle and crashed. She was airlifted to a local hospital on Saturday but was released shortly after and is expected to recover, WITN reports.

Batts was eventually arrested and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, felony flee to elude arrest, felony larceny of a motor vehicle, and damage to property.
