ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A Roanoke Rapids man faces new charges after allegedly kidnapping and threatening a woman who had already accused him of assaulting her.

The woman said that Lionel Maurice Martin, 29, grabbed her from behind while she sat on her back porch at her Gum Chapel Church Road Sunday.

Martin dragged the woman inside and held her down on the bed while he demanded that she drop charges against him, deputies said. He disabled two phones in the house, so the victim could not call for help.

Martin held the woman for about 45 minutes until she was able to escape out the front door and get help from neighbors, Halifax County Deputy Stanley Rodwell said.

Lt. Chuck Hasty and Sgt. Doug Pilgreen located Martin several hours later with the victim in her car.

Martin fled on foot, but was tracked to his home by deputies and K9 Handler Philip Man and his K9 partner Rex. Martin was arrested without incident.

The victim had previously taken out charges against Martin for assault on a female and threatening phone calls.

He faces fresh charges of first-degree kidnapping, felony breaking and entering, felony intimidating a witness and two counts of resisting a public officer. He was also charged with two counts of assault on a female and one count of threatening phone calls.

Martin was being held in the Halifax County jail without bond Monday. His first court date was set for May 7.
