DURHAM, N.C. — A 21-year-old man wanted in connection to a December 2021 shooting in Durham that killed two teenagers was taken into custody last week.

Keon Beal was arrested on April 9 in Washington, D.C., by members of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department's Violent Crime Impact Team. Beal had previously been indicted for two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder.

The charges stemmed from a shooting on Mathiston Street on Dec. 13. Isiah Carrington, 19, and Ariuna Cotton, 15, were killed after someone shot into the car they were in around 3 a.m. The SUV that Carrington, Cotton and five other teenagers were in then crashed into a utility pole near the Eugene Street intersection, Durham police said.

A 17-year-old girl, 13-year-old girl, 12-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy were also wounded in the shooting.

Carrington was a former Northern High School and Performance Learning Center student, while Cotton was a Hillside High School student, according to Durham Public Schools.

Beal was brought back to Durham on Wednesday. He remained at Durham County Jail without bond.
