Smithfield, N.C. — A 19-year-old man died when his car overturned east of Smithfield early Saturday, state troopers said.
Relatives said Stephen J. Best died in a wreck on Grabtown Road around 4 a.m. He was a graduate of Johnston County Middle College, a program that lets high school students earn their diploma and college credit.
Troopers said that Best was speeding and ran off the right side of Grabtown Road. He over-corrected, sending the car off the left side of the road. It struck a ditch and a couple trees before coming to a rest on its top.
Best was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital, troopers said. He was wearing a seat belt.
No other people or vehicles were involved in the wreck.
