— A major fire destroyed three apartments along with two other buildings and impacted 15 residents Wednesday in Smithfield.

Officials said the fire broke out at Johnston Court Apartments at 2221 Kay Drive. Fire Chief John Blanton said five buildings were impacted, which left three adults and 12 children homeless. There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation. Firefighters were still on the scene early Wednesday night putting out hot spots.

Fire officials said First Baptist Church in Smithfield and the Red Cross were assisting families.
