I'll admit it: My 10-year-old daughter was pretty skeptical when I told her a couple of months ago that we were going to a morning-long program intended to make her strong inside and out.

"What is this all about?" she asked, even as we walked into the conference space at WakeMed's Raleigh campus for an Inside-Out Strong workshop. But her skepticism didn't last long as Sarah Schall, Inside-Out Strong's energetic founder, led us through discussions about our hearts and minds, followed by some intense workouts to strengthen our bodies.

Together, along with other moms and daughters in the room, my 10-year-old and I chatted about what made us strong on the inside and then had a blast as we attempted moves during Zumba and High Intensity Interval Training workouts and relaxed during a quiet yoga session.

Schall and her husband live in Apex with their four kids, ages 9, 12, 15 and 17. "I’m smack dab in the middle of teen-hood and I thoroughly enjoy it actually," she tells me. "The relationships we get to build with our kids as they mature, watch them evolve into their own selves and become mini-adults is pretty cool to experience. It's not always easy or fun, but nonetheless cool. I love watching the cycle of life."

Schall is a former health and physical education teacher, volleyball coach, strength and conditioning coach and fitness instructor. She's now a senior health coach for a local start-up company called EHOP (Employee Health Ownership Program), guiding clients and companies through personalized health coaching and a functional medicine-based year-long curriculum.

And in 2015, she launched Inside-Out Strong to support moms and tween and teen girls. She plans to host more workshops at WakeMed in 2020. Details to come. But she offers a workbook and e-course, called Strong Together, that's available at any time and could make a great gift for moms to complete with their daughters, ages 10 and up. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop.

Go Ask Mom: How did Inside-Out Strong get its start? What problems were you seeing among the girls in your life?
Sarah Schall: I started Inside-Out Strong as a way to stay connected to the teen students and athletes I was working with.

As a health teacher and athletic coach, I saw a gap in the amount of time we spend developing girls physical bodies vs. strengthening their emotional, spiritual and mental selves. We weren’t developing the whole person, and I felt we were missing impactful opportunities to raise up strong female leaders.

Our culture puts a lot of pressure on teens to perform, look and be perfect. We focus on excelling at sports, in performances and recitals by pouring hours into practices, teaching technique and skills, sending the message that those things are what matter in life. Don’t get me wrong: Those things are important, but I felt we were doing a disservice to our teen girls who need more guidance, encouragement and techniques for strengthening their minds and their hearts, along with their bodies.

In 2015, Inside-Out Strong was born as a means to bridge that gap…to strengthen teen girls hearts, minds and bodies while they were moldable and open to positive influence. It began as a training curriculum for teachers, coaches and other influencers, but has now grown to live workshops, online e-course and small group options. In 2017, we began the Mother + Daughter workshops to connect mothers to their daughters.

It began as a fundraising idea for a missions trip, but has evolved into a fun and meaningful event that we all look forward to. In our workshops we provide an opportunity for mothers and daughters to connect and strengthen their relationship through both physical movement and meaningful conversations. We are intentional with our short time together and hopeful that our “work-ins” for the heart and mind, facilitate deep discussions and foster more important conversations between a mother and her daughter in the months following our event.

GAM: What all do you provide?
SS: We have three main offerings.
  • We provide live workshops for mothers and daughters, ages 10 and up, and currently host two to four a year in the Wake County area.
  • We provide a 10-week workbook and online curriculum with weekly workouts partnered with weekly “work-ins” and discussion questions and mentor testimonies. We have video testimonials of college athletes from both UNC and Duke, plus an Olympic captain answering all of the same questions we ask our girls and moms to answer in our workbook. To hear their response is empowering and motivating.
  • We offer our workbook and online curriculum to groups of five or more for a discounted price. We believe impact is made within the groups girls already trust and are invested in and led by the adults already influencing those teen girls…either their moms, coaches, teachers, trainers and youth/troop leaders
GAM: Your programs are both really high energy, but also really contemplative. What do you hope moms and daughters will take away from it?
SS: In the workshops, I hope moms and girls experience genuine fun and joy as they share laughter and smiles. I hope they feel an appreciation of their bodies and the unique way it moves while learning new ways to strengthen it. I hope they have a new found motivation to explore movement that keeps them strong and healthy, together. I hope they feel that they are enough, but never too much as they feel seen and heard by each other. I hope they experience deep, meaningful conversations with each other that tend to get sidelined with our busy lifestyles. I hope they see each other through the eyes of love and strengthen their bond and relationship while strengthening their bodies.

In our workbooks, I always hope that our curriculum serves as a launching point for a girl to find herself, feel empowered and build foundational confidence to show up just as she is. I hope the questions, reflections and testimonials serve as a tool to build a teen girls up. I hope it opens up meaningful discussion between a girl and her Mom or another influencing woman leading her. I hope Inside-Out Strong fosters authentic hearts, positive minds and strong bodies in girls and women alike.

GAM: What do you enjoy about what you do?
SS: I really enjoy pouring into teen/tween girls. I love to see them invest in themselves and each other. I also love supporting the moms who are working their hardest to raising strong girls…it takes a village. Our hope is that our program serves as a powerful tool for moms as they raise a strong, confident and genuine teen girl. I also love health and seeing people become all they are created to be. I love that I get to see growth inside and out during our short three-hour workshop as girls and moms participate in the “work-ins” and workouts…being together for a common goal and feeling the palpable energy is my favorite.
GAM: What are your hopes for the future of your business?
SS: I hope to host more workshops to give moms and girls an opportunity to taste the fun and lasting impact that short time together can have on their relationship. I hope to have our curriculum and workbooks accessible and used by more groups such as Girl Scout troops, YMCA teen trainings, athletic teams, dance companies, youth groups. Our girls need guidance, encouragement and support in this noisy, busy world. I hope we can support girls and their Moms in slowing down, soaking in the time together and showing up just as this world needs them too.
