Faced a bit of a dilemma last weekend. Maybe it shouldn’t have been, but for me, it kinda was.

It was the 4th of July. We’d been at the pool for several hours. My two older kids, ages 5 and 6, for whatever reason, were having a bad day. They were fighting constantly and just not listening. You know what I’m talking about. One minute they’re laughing and having a great time, the next, Caiden is punching Campbell in the face. What in the world!!

After swimming we went to a friend’s house for dinner. The in-fighting and lawlessness continued. My husband and I had enough. We gave them the ultimate warning, one more slip up and NO fireworks! They looked shocked. Take away fireworks? It only comes once a year! The kids had been looking forward to the show for days! We thought surely that would get their attention.

And it did, for about 20 minutes. Sure enough, they started acting up again. Do they not get how this works? That was the last straw. NO fireworks for you! They were silent for a split second and than the crying ensued. Too bad so sad, they were warned. We put them in the car, crying the whole time, and went home where they went straight to their rooms for the rest of the night.

They protested and protested but we didn’t give in. It was a rough night. But it needed to be done.

Whew, glad that’s over.
