Double lung transplant gives woman new life after COVID

Since the start of the pandemic, countless people have lost their lives to COVID-19. Tolishia Alexander was almost one of them. On August 10, 2021, she became the first UNC patient to undergo a double lung transplant due to COVID-19.

A woman in Michigan died 61 days after she received a pair of lungs from an organ donor who had been infected with the coronavirus, according to a case report published this month.

Following physical therapy, I walked a mile on the treadmill She will never forget when they first removed her breathing machine. When I took that deep breath and they said, Come on, you gotta breathe and I went like this It felt so amazing because I was able to feel my lungs expand. Dr. McCarthy says Carmen's dire need for new lungs put her near the top of the donation list regionally, but he worries that won't always be the case for others, as the potential need during this pandemic increases. We are worried with the amount of covert that we're seeing. There may be more patients like Carmen in the future. We're able to make it through the acute phase of their of their Covad illness, but who may never return Thio the normal lung function that they had before they got sick. Carmen hopes her battle serves as a wake up call. I just hope people start thinking about how serious this is and and really do the right thing
