Lumberton police say man involved in traffic crash died after being shot

Lumberton police were looking into a two-vehicle crash on Tuesday where one of the victims had been shot and later died.

LUMBERTON, N.C. — Lumberton police were looking into a two-vehicle crash on Tuesday where one of the victims had been shot and later died.

Officers responded to a call just before 2 p.m. of a head-on collision on Martin Luther King Drive near Starlight Drive involving a Ford van traveling south, driven by Christopher Clark of Saint Pauls, and a Ford Focus traveling north, driven by Andre Vereen of Lumberton.

Police said the crash happened when the Ford Focus crossed the center line and struck the Ford van head-on. The driver of the van, Christopher Clark, was not injured during the crash. The driver of the Ford Focus, Andre Vereen, was unresponsive and transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

During the investigation of the crash, officers discovered that Vereen had been shot in the upper body. Investigators were called to the scene to begin an investigation into the shooting.
