Lumberton 5-year-old in hospital with life-threatening injury after accidental discharge of gun

A Lumberton five-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was accidentally shot when a gun went off on Tuesday.

LUMBERTON, N.C. — A Lumberton five-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was accidentally shot when a gun went off on Tuesday.

Lumberton police said they responded along with Robeson County EMS, Lumberton Rescue and Lumberton Fire to 4390 Fayetteville Road in Lumberton around 2:18 p.m. They found the child suffering from a gunshot wound to her torso at Southeastern Dermatology. She was rushed by helicopter to an undisclosed hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Investigators said it appeared the child was in a vehicle in the parking lot with a family member. The child gained access to an unsecured firearm, which was accidentally discharged, striking the child.
