RALEIGH, N.C. — Protesters returned to Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson's office in downtown Raleigh on Friday afternoon after video surfaced of his anti-LGBTQ rhetoric during a visit to a Winston-Salem church last weekend.
Robinson, a Republican who's likely to run for governor in three years, has been under fire for weeks for comments he's made at churches and conservative gatherings, such as calling homosexuality and transgenderism "filth" and "garbage."
He maintains his comments are targeted at LGBTQ-themed books that he wants out of school libraries and aren't against any individuals because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

He reiterated that stance during a 45-minute appearance at Berean Baptist Church in Winston-Salem on Sunday, but he also made clear that he believes homosexuals are inferior to heterosexuals, saying they serve no purpose.

"Everything that God made serves a purpose," he said. “Will somebody please explain to me the purpose of homosexuality? ... What does it create? It creates nothing."

During that segment of his talk, Robinson noted that even cow dung and maggots have a purpose.

"This man's theology and religious practices are not only flawed and a perversion of the Christian tenets, he places countless people at risk of violent attacks and even murder every time he opens his mouth," said protest organizer Rev. Vance Haywood, senior pastor at St. John's Metropolitan Community Church, in Raleigh. "Robinson has no place standing at the holy desk of any legitimate Christian church unless it is to confess his sins against humanity, seek forgiveness from the congregation and engage in repentance for his wrongdoing."

Robinson argued that teachers who lead classroom lessons on LGBTQ issues are the ones who need to repent.

“Trying to teach these children about homosexuality and transgender [issues], that ain’t got no place in no school," he said. "I didn’t say you don’t have a right to be a homosexual. Go on and be a homosexual all you want to. You want me to stay out of your bedroom? Stay out of my classroom.”

Robinson dismissed gender diversity as a concept from "The Muppet Show" or a Steven Spielberg movie.

"What we are doing is playing God, trying to tell these children that God’s creation doesn’t really exist: 'There ain’t no male and female, really. That is a figment of your imagination,'" he said. "That is not what we are supposed to be teaching. Those are lies from the pit of hell, and we need to start standing up against them."

“Ain’t but two genders – male and female," he continued. "I don’t care how much you cut yourself up, drug yourself up and dress yourself up. You are still either one of two things: You're either a man or a woman. You might be a cut-up, dressed-up, drugged-up, ugly man or woman, but you are still a man or a woman, and I don't care who doesn't like it."

Robinson said he welcomes the criticism he receives from the LGBTQ community and their supporters, saying politicians like him need to take a stand.

"We are at war in this country right now. We are at war for our freedom. We are at war for everything this country is built on," he said. “We don’t have a homosexual issue. That is just the tool of the devil to continue to divide us and lead us into immorality. That’s the problem we have because we purged God from society. We have a morality problem.”

Gov. Roy Cooper called Robinson's comments "vile, hateful language" that he uses to "get attention."

"[It] is not reflective of our welcoming and diverse state, and Republican leaders should condemn these comments for the good of North Carolina," Cooper said in a statement issued by his press secretary.
