RALEIGH, N.C. — The last full moon of the year is Wednesday night.

Each full moon has a name, and the December moon is called the cold moon or the long night’s moon. In December, we have the longest night of the year near the Winter Solstice. This year, the solstice occurs on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The December moon rides higher in the sky than during any other season, and with our long nights, the moon is a beautiful sight. Our skies will clear Wednesday evening, and you might be able to see Venus and Saturn appearing close together at twilight. Then the moon will be a treat under clear skies.

Bundle up if you want to gaze at it! Our temperatures will fall into the upper 20s.
