Longtime WRAL producer dies

Earl Ashe, the first director hired at WRAL-TV and a longtime television producer, died Thursday at age 87.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Earl Ashe, the first director hired at WRAL-TV and a longtime television producer, died Thursday at age 87.

During his career at WRAL, Ashe produced and directed the daily news, the Uncle Paul children’s show, local wrestling and many other shows and commercials, according to his obituary. He also wrote and produced campaign commercials for U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms after working with him at WRAL, as well as other politicians.

He is survived by his wife, two children, a grandson, three sisters, three brothers and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service is set for Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer`s Association or Transitions LifeCare.
