DURHAM, N.C. — A longtime Durham Public Schools educator has died.

Clarke Alston Egerton Jr. worked at various Durham schools for 42 years. He retired from Hillside High School in 1997 after serving as the school's band director since 1967.

During his time at Hillside High, Egerton taught music, marching band, flag corps, rifle corps, majorettes, symphonic band and concert band.

"The entire DPS family and I are deeply saddened by the news of Mr. Egerton's passing," Superintendent Pascal Mubenga said in a statement. "Mr. Egerton served as an educator, mentor and friend for thousands within our school system through his career, and his legacy and memory will continue to live on through those who knew him."

Funeral arrangements for Egerton are not known.
