RALEIGH, N.C. — Wakefield High School, Wakefield Middle School and Wakefield Elementary School were all placed on code red lockdown on Tuesday, making for a scary day for students and parents.

A Wake County Public School System representative said the lockdown was precautionary due to police activity brought on by a false threat.

Raleigh police got a call about someone with a gun around 11:30 a.m. Police searched the school and detained a male juvenile. Authorities don't know if the juvenile is a student at one of the schools.

Around 12:50 p.m., the lockdown was lifted as police deemed the threat not credible. Officers were told about a gun being in the school, however, a gun was never found.

"We pulled in from lunch and noticed that there were like five police officers outside standing at the school talking," said Wakefield High School senior Mason Morgan. "We noticed students were running out of the lunch room and we decided not to get out. And we noticed a girl walking over and trying to get into the school and officer told her to go. We took that as let's get out of here and play it safe."

The schools are next to each other along Wakefield Pines Drive in Raleigh. Because the detainee is a juvenile, more information will not be released on the juvenile's identity.

Police did not give a reason why the person was detained.

The circumstances behind the lockdown are still unclear. Police and Wake County Public School System are working together to investigate.

"With so much going on nowadays, it's terrifying," said mother Cindy Potter. "It's sad. It's scary. You can't help but to just freeze up, you know."

In December 2019, two students claimed a shooter was on the joint elementary, middle and high school campus. In that instance, a caller told the 911 dispatcher that three intruders were near the school's football field, in the area of Wakefield Pines Drive, and that shots were fired.
