CARY, N.C. — In its third year, the Locally Made Market has become a go-to spot for shoppers and local artisans.

When Susie Silver and her wife, Ann Palmquist, decided to start the market, there really wasn't anything like it happening in Cary. The two had been attending a lot of pop-up markets in the Triangle with their company, Tiny Redbird Goods, which focuses on gender neutral clothing for children. Despite living in Cary, they weren't doing any markets there.

"I thought, wait a second, we need something here," Silver said.

At the time, Downtown Cary's Food and Flea monthly vintage market was just starting to get off the ground, but there was still a need for something that focused local artisans.

Silver reached out to her friends at The Mayton Inn about hosting a market in one of the rooms there. Having met a lot of artisans through other markets, she was able to get a great collection for that first market in December 2015. It has only grown since then, with this weekend's market hosting 50 vendors.

"It's local people presenting local artisans at a local vendor," Silver said.

An artist herself, Silver is connected to the artisan community and understands the struggles artists face.

"I care about this maker community," she said. "We are humbled by the growth of the market."

The local focus continues in the pre-market giveaways which have always included art with a Cary focus.

The Locally Made Market will host its next event on Sunday, Dec. 9, at The Mayton Inn. There will be 50 vendors including Cottage Lane Kitchen, Pass the Gravy clothing and Smiling Elephant Jewelry Studio.
