This week is Fire Prevention Week when fire departments and safety experts draw attention to the dangers of fire and how to prevent them. This year, the focus is on fire safety in the kitchen.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association, cooking is the No. 1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries, and unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen.

To mark the week, there are a few special events and virtual activities. Here's what's happening.

Raleigh Fire Department

The Raleigh Fire Department is hosting a series of virtual events on topics such as cooking safety and grilling safety this week.

It also will hold drive-through events from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Oct. 7, at Fire Station 15, 1815 Spring Forest Rd., and 10 a.m. to noon, Oct. 10, at the Wake County Boys & Girls Club Teen Center, next to Fire Station 7, 721 N. Raleigh Blvd. There will be some goodie bags for kids.

More information about these events is on the city's website.

Safe Kids and UNC Trauma

The two groups teamed up to offer this message from UNC Coach Mack Brown and UNC football players with some tips for kitchen safety. The groups offer more kid-friendly fire safety information here too.
