Local first responders celebrated for heroic acts

The First Responders Appreciation Breakfast at PNC Arena celebrated our local heroes Wednesday morning.

This year’s event, hosted by the Raleigh Chamber and CPI Security, honored six groups of first responders.

The winner from the Wake County EMS-Paramedics is Jason Cox.

Cox is honored for the heroic acts he took to save a man’s life after a severe allergic reaction in May.

His peers say that he is always humble and a skilled professional and that he is very deserving of this honor.

The Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center celebrated a group of their 911 telecommunicators.

These winners are honored for their quick thinking during the shooting of a Raleigh police officer in January.

Their peers say when it was all said and done, their teamwork and dedication shined through.

The NC State Highway Patrol winner is Zac Bumgardner.

He is being honored for his quick thinking on stopping a vehicle pursuit without causing any injury in April.

Along with his impeccable work ethic, Bumgardner also enjoys giving back to his community.

Winners from the City of Raleigh Fire Department are the members of the Engine 12 and Latter 8 - B Platoon.

They are being honored for their combined heroic acts in saving a pinned subject in an accident last May.

Their peers say that day was a great reflection of professionalism and skill both teams had.

The Wake County Sheriff’s Department winner is Mackenzie Ragan.

She is honored for her heroic acts as a 911 communicator.

Her calming attitude and willingness to step up as a leader is just some of the many reason she is being honored.

And the City of Raleigh Police Department is honoring a group of eight officers, detectives and supervisors.

This group is being celebrated for their undercover work that started in 2018 and is still ongoing.

They have arrested multiple suspects, combining over 96 felony charges to this day.

WRAL News thanks all of these everyday local heroes for their hard work and dedication to the public.

People can celebrate local first responders by coming out to see the emergency vehicles our local heroes use, including WRAL’s Storm Tracker.

The display will be open to the public outside of the PNC Arena from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
