RALEIGH, N.C. — Many of us remember exactly where we were when we found out the U.S. Capitol was being attacked on Jan. 6, 2021, when we stopped and watched on our phones and televisions in shock.

Of the more than 700 people charged by the U.S. Department of Justice, 18 of them are from North Carolina or have ties to the state.

One year later, hundreds of rallies and vigils will take place nationwide, including two in Raleigh.

At 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Carolina Peace Center will host an event at Raleigh's Bicentennial Plaza, between the State Capitol and the Legislative Building. Elected officials, activists, veterans, students and other community members will reflect on the tragic events.

Voters and lawmakers will meet at the same location at 5:30 p.m. to reflect of the deadly attack and to call on voting rights legislation to be passed. The event is being led by the group Indivisible Triangle Daily Call to Action.

The public is welcome at both events.
