In the midst of cookouts and trips to the pool and beach, it's easy for some to forget what Memorial Day is about. If you're not working, here are some local ceremonies meant to honor veterans and people who lost their lives serving the United States.

In the midst of cookouts and trips to the pool and beach, it's easy for some to forget what Memorial Day is about. If you're not working, here are some local ceremonies meant to honor veterans and people who lost their lives serving the United States.
In Raleigh
Wreath Laying Ceremony (N.C. Capitol, 1 E. Edenton Street) - At 10:45 a.m., people will gather at the state's capitol to honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Governor Roy Cooper ordered all flags to fly at half staff Monday as a sign of respect.
Community Memorial Day Service (Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave.) - This 11 a.m. event is provided by Heartland Hospice. The service will include a flag ceremony, guitar and banjo music, refreshments and a white balloon release in memory of those who have died.
Memorial Day Observance (Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Ave.) - A ceremony at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh will honor fallen heroes. The event will feature patriotic music and a wreath laying ceremony. It starts at 4 p.m. at the cemetery's Veterans' Field of Honor.
In Cary
Cary's Memorial Day Remembrance (Veterans Freedom Park, 1513 N. Harrison Ave.) - From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., join the Town of Cary for a ceremony in remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The ceremony will feature speakers from the Town of Cary and local armed forces community support groups.
In Durham
Remembrance Ceremony (Durham County Administration Building, E. Main Street) - At 9 a.m., the public is invited to help call the roll of more than 350 active-duty service members from Durham County who died while at war.
In Fayetteville
Memorial Day Celebration (Freedom Memorial Park, Bragg Boulevard) - At 10 a.m., the community plans to honor Cumberland County veterans and others who died at war.
