A mother is traumatized after a bullet zipped through her 4-month-old baby's room over the weekend.

"The bullet would have gone right over my head," says Allie Harrold, the baby's mother. "It's hard to swallow. I feel numb."

The child is okay, but the family is very shaken up. Bullet holes in the wall leave a frightening reminder of how much more terrible things could have been.

It's common for people living in the Eagles Nest Community in Johnston County to hear shots being fired in the woods behind their home – but what's not usual is a bullet striking a house.

"It came through here, then hit the door, then the back of the door, through this wall and then into our bathroom in here," explains Harrold.

Just inches above a rocking chair in a nursery: a bullet hole.

"If we hadn’t had someone visiting, I would have been sitting here rocking her like this," says Harrold.

Harrold was chatting with her friend in their home Saturday afternoon. Her two children -- one almost 2 years old, the other just 4 months -- were by her side when the scary event happened.

"It sounded like a firecracker hitting the house," recalls Harrold.

The bullet blasted right through the Harrold's home – mere inches away from where 4-month-old Reilly sleeps, plays and naps.

"It's very traumatizing to look at," says Harrold."My baby still has to nap in here. Putting her to bed last night was hard."

Luckily no one was injured. The family called 911 after finding all the bullet holes they believe came from a rifle.

"They tried to recover the bullet. It fell into the wall. The Sheriff's Office told us it would just sit in the SBI lab, as it's an isolated incident and damage to property."

The shots came from these woods, on private property -- where shooting is legal in Johnston County. What is not legal is when it hits someone's home.

"You think the one place you can keep them safe is in your home," she says. "Our home has been violated."

"We are supposed to have a birthday party here Saturday," she says anxiously. "Our friends are bringing their kids to a house with a bullet hole in it."

The family says they are speaking with an attorney to see what additional steps they can take.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office say they are investigating the incident. No charges have been filed.
