WAKE FOREST, N.C. — Lightning on Wednesday night sparked fires at a senior center in Wake Forest, and several other structures were damaged as severe weather moved across central North Carolina.

The parking lot of the Northern Wake Senior Center, located at 235 E. Holding Ave., was blocked off with traffic cones Thursday and will be closed for the foreseeable future, according to firefighters.

Photos from inside the senior center show damage to the ceiling and walls of the building and debris littering the floor after lightning started a fire. Smoke and fire damage was extensive, but no one was injured, as the building was closed at the time.

According to the Town of Wake Forest, although several rooms were damaged, the building’s sprinkler system limited the spread of the fire and prevented further damage.

Lightning also struck a home on Autumn Ridge Drive in Knightdale and a used car lot in Rolesville at 302 N. Main St., sparking fires at both locations. No one was injured.

Damaging winds caused trees to fall on two homes on Randshire Way in northeast Raleigh, and viewers sent WRAL News photos and video of lightning strikes in Clayton.

Another round of severe weather is expected Thursday afternoon and evening, when a Level 2 risk is in place for central N.C. Damaging winds and lightning will again be the biggest threats.
