CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. — The U.S. Forest Service, along with state and local firefighters, was battling a wildfire Friday in Carteret County. Officials said the blaze began with a lightning strike Thursday at about 3 p.m. in the area south of Millis Road and west of 9 Mile Road.

Heavy smoke was reported in the area, and authorities closed 9 Mile Road from N.C. Highway 24 to Robert Road for four hours Friday afternoon. That stretch was expected to be open only to local residents between noon and 4 p.m., according to Jo Ann Smith, emergency services director for the county.
