Interstate 40 turns 20 years old

Construction of Interstate 40 began in Haywood County in 1956. The last leg, from Raleigh to Wilmington, was finished in 1990. Interstate 40 is the third-longest highway in the interstate system, according to the Federal Highway. From Wilmington, the interstate stretches more than 2,500 miles west to Barstow, Calif.
