Lake Lure

This beautiful mountain lake on the Broad River is famed as the setting for the movie "Dirty Dancing." It is nestled neck to Chimney Rock in western Rutherford County. A resort was formed there in 1927. The town has 27 miles of shoreline and sells electricity to Duke Energy.

Lake Junaluska

This 250-acre lake sits at 2,584 feet above sea level. It has a Cherokee name and rests on the Methodist assembly grounds in central Haywood County. This Haywood County town has 18 peaks over 6,000 feet.

Montreat

This Buncombe County town is home to Lake Susan, evangelist Billy Graham and Montreat College.

Blowing Rock

This mountain town entices with a picturesque downtown, the Chetola Resort, excellent restaurants and romantic trails. It's the Prettiest Small Town in N.C., sitting on Bass and Julian Price lakes.

Morganton

Just below the Linville Gorge, this town is near the popular Lake James State Park. Created as a hydroelectric lake, it's become a popular nesting spot for bald eagles.
