ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Golfers at Rocky Mount's Sunset Park called police Saturday when they spotted two dogs, covered in filth and hair matted.

The SPCA Alliance of NC took the dogs in, cleaned them up, provided fluids and food and checked on their injuries.

Workers there named the dogs Charley and Marley. A bath and a shave revealed they are both male poodle mixes of about 2 to 3 years old.

By Wednesday afternoon, both dogs were resting comfortably in a foster home. SPCA Alliance of NC had raised more than $4,000 in donations to fund the care and safekeeping of the dogs until they are ready for adoption.

A $2,500 reward is being offered by the Humane Society of The United States for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the condition the dogs were in.
