Why do we hunt eggs on Easter?

According to History.com, the Easter bunny and his egg hunt tradition dates back to the 1700s by German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought along stories an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” The children would make nests so the creature could lay its colored eggs inside. The tradition evolved and spread across the country.

What ages are Easter egg hunts for?

Egg hunts are typically for children ages 12 and younger. The hunts are divided into age groups so smaller children are able to gather eggs together.

Easter Egg Hunting Tips

  • Get there before the scheduled egg hunt. They happen really fast -- so if you're a few minutes late, you'll probably miss it.
    • Bring a basket or bag or some other thing to carry the eggs your kids find.
      • Be mindful of the age restrictions and schedules of the various egg hunts.
        • If your child has a basket full of candy and you notice that another child has very little, encourage sharing.
          • One word on the egg hunts: Don't get there late! It can take no more than a few minutes for a group of kids to fill their baskets with thousands of eggs. If you're five minutes late, you've probably missed it.

            Easter Egg Hunts in Raleigh

            March 24: Meet the Bunny at Abbotts Creek Community Center - Hop out to Abbotts Creek and meet the Bunny. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in games and crafts. After making your way through the crafts and games, stop for a picture with the bunny and pick up a plush egg from the egg patch. Due to the limited number of crafts and prizes pre-registration is required for each participant. 

            March 26: Egg-citing Teen Glow Egg Hunt at Lions Park - Open to those 12 to 17,  this event includes egg-citing games and activities that include glow min-it to win it, challenges, pre-stuffed eggs, snacks, prizes and more.

            March 27: The Bunny Bash at Brier Creek - Hop on over to Brier Creek Community Center for stations of arts, crafts, games, snacks for the whole family. 

            March 28: Egg-splorers at Jaycee Park -  Outdoor activities will begin at 10 a.m., with egg hunts beginning at 11 a.m.. Registration is encouraged.

            March 28: Mordecai Egg Hunt - Egg hunts will begin at 11 a.m. for age groups 0-4, 5-9, and 10 and up. This is a free event and registration is not required.

            March 27: GLOWED UP Musical EGG-sploration - John Chavis Community Center is the site of this event. Let’s GLOW for an EGG-citing hunt with a GLOWED-up musical chair twist! Young EGG-plorers will venture into designated areas for a captivating search of luminous eggs and prizes. While the music sounds, youngsters can move around collecting eggs, but like musical chairs, each time the music stops, participants must freeze in place. Once the music strikes back into action, they can continue in search of goodies.

            March 27: Spring EGG-stravaganza at John Chavis Park -  Spring into action and hop on over to Chavis Park for an EGG-straordinary hunt and SHELL-ebration. Young EGG-explorers will be divided into two age groups (0-3yrs and 4–5yrs) in search of bright, colorful eggs tucked away in designated areas of the park. Joyful EGG-pressions are sure to bring cheer as little chicks fill their baskets with goodies and prizes.

            March 28: Spring Egg Dive - Held at Millbrook Exchange Pool from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Participants will collect plastic eggs in their baskets, then exchange your collected eggs for candy. Participants will also have a chance to win an Easter basket if you find the  Golden Egg. There will also be crafts, music, and photo booth.

            April 1: Hopping Down the Bunny Trail at Marsh Creek - Come join us for an evening of egg-static fun. Kids will get to fill their baskets with eggs, crafts and prizes while they stroll through the egg-cellent activity stations. Kids will also get an opportunity to get their picture taken with the bunny! This event is free for kids 12 and under - pre-registration is requested.

            April 4: The Biltmore Hills Eggraviganza - You will even have the opportunity to take a picture with the Biltmore Bunny. The Egg Hunt will start at 11:00 a.m. This event is indoors and outdoors, and is free for all.

            Easter Egg Hunts in Durham

            March 22: Spring Egg Dive -  Dive, splash, and swim for eggs and win prizes at this Spring Egg Dive event at Campus Hills Pool. All swim levels are welcome and life vests will be provided. An adult will need to enter the water with children 9 years of age and younger. Registration is limited.

            March 27-29 and April 3-5: Dino Egg Hunt - Bring your junior paleontologists on an excavation adventure as they hunt for colorful dinosaur eggs in exchange for a special “Dino-prize” and explore the Dinosaur Trail at the Museum of Life and Science.

            March 28: Egg Hunt at West Point on the Eno -  Children 12 and under will be divided into groups according to their age for the egg hunt. Find the golden egg and win an extra prize. All age groups will start at 10:15 a.m. Games and crafts to follow.

            March 28: Camps Hill Park Egg Hunt - Egg Hunt begins promptly at 10:15 a.m. Children will be divided into groups according to age. Find the golden egg to win an extra prize. This is an inclusive children of all ability levels.

            April 2: Egg Decorating at Walltown Park Rec Center - Participants will explore colors and textures as they decorate eggs using food coloring, stickers and glitter. This class encourages creativity, fine motor skills and self-expression. Adult participation required. Open to ages 3 to 6. All supplies are provided.

            Easter Egg Hunts in Apex and Holly Springs 

            March 21: Spring Fling in Holly Springs - The Spring Fling at Ting (Stadium) will include a morning of games, activities, a bunny meet and greet and a huge egg hunt.

            March 24: Ultimutt Dog Egg Hunt - Egg hunts are not just for children anymore! Bring your furry friends and a basket to hunt for treat-filled eggs together and get a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny. The UltiMutt Dog Egg Hunt is being offered for all Town of Apex Annual Dog Park Pass holders and their fur babies.

            March 23: Specialized Recreation Flashlight Egg Hunt - This is a special event for individuals with disabilities. Grab your flashlight and search for candy filled eggs at Apex Nature Park.

            March 23: Egg Hunt for Individuals with Disabilities - Hop on over for a fun-filled egg hunt designed for kids under 16 with disabilities at Apex Nature Park. Eggs will be hidden throughout the Nature Park Amphitheater, each filled with surprises, and there will even be a couple golden eggs, too! Parents should stay for this event. Advance registration is required.

            March 24: Egg-streme Teen Flashlight Egg Hunt - Free event for teens ages 10-13. Grab your flashlight and search for candy filled eggs at Apex Nature Park. The hunt will start precisely at 8:15 p.m. so please arrive at 8 p.m..

            March 28: Apex Bunny Trail Egg Hunt - Grab your family and get ready to hit the trail for a free egg hunt at Seagroves Farm Park in Apex! Registration is required. There are four time slots to choose from.

            Easter Egg Hunts in Rolesville, Wake Forest and Zebulon

            March 28: Wake Forest 2026 Easter Eggstravaganza - This egg hunt is happening at  E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Join  the Bunny Trail any time between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to "poach" your eggs. You have two hours to leisurely hop in and collect your eggs - entirely at your convenience. An Egg-ceptional Zone will be open to children with disabilities and their families from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

            March 28: Happy Hoppy Easter Party and Egg Hunt - Open to those ages 12 and under, things start at 10 a.m. with pre-hunt activities, a meet and greet with the Easter Bunny, as well as games and arts and crafts. Participants must be present before the hunt begins at 11 a.m. at Zebulon Community Park.

            March 28: Rolesville Egg Rush - The Egg Rush will take place at the Rolesville Middle School football field and will be divided into three age groups: 0-3 years old, 4-6 years old, and 7-10 years old. Eggs will be filled with candy and toys this year. There will be golden prize eggs in each age group too.

            Easter Egg Hunts in Fuquay-Varina

            March 27: Fuquay-Varina Adaptive Egg Hunt - The Town of Fuquay-Varina will be hosting its first Adaptive Egg Hunt beginning at 4:30 pm at the South Park Community Center. This sensory-friendly program is designed for kids ages 10 and under. 

            March 28: Fuquay-Varina Easter Egg Hunt - Grab your Easter basket and get ready for some EGG-cellent fun in Fleming Loop Park! The Easter Bunny is on site to help kick off the annual Easter Egg Hunt at 10:00 am (we recommend arriving a little early). We are so EGG-cited to see you there!

            March 28: Fuquay-Varina Downtown Candy Hop -  Bring your peeps downtown for the Fuquay-Varina Downtown Association's Candy Hop on April 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hop along Main & Broad Streets and fill your Easter baskets with treats from participating merchants and make some memories along the way.  

            Easter Egg Hunts in Garner and Clayton

            March 28: Garner Spring Eggstravaganza - Enjoy games, kids’ crafts, music, food trucks, and more at this free family event from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Lake Benson Park.

            April 4: Clayton Tiny Tots Easter Egg Hunt - Join us at Clayton Community Park for a fun-filled egg hunt designed specifically for our littlest bunnies, ages 4 and under. Due to construction at Clayton High School, and parking limitations at Clayton Community Park, this year’s event has been sized down to create a safe and joyful experience for toddlers and preschoolers.

            Easter Egg Hunts in Cary and Morrisville 

            March 28: Easter Egg Hunt at Parkside Town Commons - Children 10 and under can hunt from over 24,000 Easter Eggs!

            March 29: Hippity Hoppity Easter Egg Hunt 2026 at USA Baseball National Training Complex - Grab your Easter baskets and enjoy an egg hunt. Registration is required, and each child must be registered.

             April 2: Peeps in the Park - Morrisville Community Park is the site of this Easter and spring-themed scavenger hunt.

            Easter Egg Hunts in Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough

            March 25-April 5: Easter with Goats at Spring Haven Farm - Egg hunting is fun just in itself; however, when you add goats its so much more fun. It costs $15.95 to participate.

            March 28: Carrboro Community Egg Hunt Celebration - The Carrboro Recreation, Parks & Cultural Resources Department will sponsor a spring celebration for children ages 2-10 years. Free activities including a Giant Egg Hunt for three age groups. Fun for the whole family.

            March 28: Flashlight Egg Hunt at Wilson Park in Carrboro - Just because kids are older doesn’t mean that can’t enjoy an Egg Hunt! Youth ages 11 to 14 are invited to bring their flashlights out and enjoy a fun Egg Hunt in the dark! “Special Golden Eggs” will be hidden for special prizes! No pre-registration required. NOTE: Youth MUST bring their own flashlight and bag/ basket to collect the eggs.

            March 28: Orange County Community Egg Hunt - Enjoy egg hunts, crafts, photos with the easter bunny, inflatables and more in Hillsborough.
