The Triangle offers some of the best local live music experiences you can think of — and some of the best are free to attend.

Recurring live music events
Tuesday Blues Jam at Blue Note Grill (Durham) every Tuesday, from 7 to 10 p.m. — Musicians are free to jam and share the stage at one of the longest-running open blues jams in the triangle.
Thursday Jazz Jams at Missy Lane’s (Durham) every Thursday, starting at 7 p.m. — This jazz bar in downtown Durham recently started offering no cover fees for their weekly jazz jams, featuring recurring and new jazz artists.
The Moon Room (Raleigh) — This intimate jazz and vinyl bar in downtown Raleigh off North West Street offers live jazz almost every weeknight, most with no cover and no reservations. Call ahead to check for availability.
Speakeasy (Carrboro) — While this bar in the heart of downtown Carrboro hosts live music or dance parties almost everyday, their most staple, relaxing live music event happens every Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., starting with their resident band Mellow Swells.
Jazz nights at The Cave (Carrboro) every Monday, starting at 9 p.m. — This literal underground bar offers music of all genres every night, with a jazz jam on Mondays to start your week off right. While these events are free to attend, donations are suggested to support the artists.
Beer and Banjos — Sip on some beer and enjoy some banjo bluegrass at the following locations and times of the week:
- Bowstring Brewyard (Raleigh) every Tuesday, with exceptions, starting at 6:30 p.m.
- Old Mill Farm (Durham) every third Thursday, starting at 6:30 p.m.
- The Speakeasy (Carrboro) every Tuesday, starting at 7 p.m.
Southern Village (Chapel Hill) — A traditional, small-town style neighborhood, Southern Village surrounds a family-friendly central green which hosts a summer farmers’ market and concerts all year long:
- Sunday Night Live Music on the Green every Sunday until Sept. 21, starting at 7 p.m.
- Thursday night live music starting at 7 p.m.
- Wine Down Wednesdays, with live music from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Live music at Compass Rose Brewery every Friday, starting at 7 p.m. — Check their Instagram page at the beginning of every week to find out which artist is playing.
BeatBox Stage performances at Boxyard RTP — There’s no lack of live music at the Boxyard RTP, as the all-inclusive hang-out spot offers something almost every day at specific times that work for everyone. Their weekly events are:
- Live jazz every Wednesday, from noon to 2 p.m.
- Live acoustic performances every Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Live collective sounds from musicians across the region every Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Eclectic D.J. mixes every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- More live music on specific Saturday nights, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Bynum Front Porch (Pittsboro) — This non-profit dedicated to fostering family-friendly events hosts live performances all ranging from bluegrass to indie rock, almost every day. The events are free to attend, but donations and tips to the artists are highly recommended.
Music on Main in Southpoint Mall (Durham) every Saturday until October, starting at 5 p.m. — Sponsored by Duke Arts, the outdoor concert series taking place at the Southpoint Mall offers top-notch talent and a laid-back vibe, creating the perfect way to spend an evening under the stars.
ZincHouse Winery & Brewery (Durham) — This beautiful, large outdoor winery features live artists almost every day they’re open. Enjoy the music free with some wine to sip on or some food truck bites to snack on.
Lula and Sadie’s Jazz Brunch (Durham) every Sunday, when they open — While you have to have reservations to sit inside, there is no better way than to spend your Sunday mornings with some acoustic, soft jazz from local musicians and delicious southern-inspired food.
The Durham Rooftop (Durham) — From jazz to house beats, you have many different options to listen to at the top of the Durham Hotel, where you can get breathtaking views of the city and delicious food and drinks alongside. Check their calendar for the different artists they have almost every day of every week.

Friday Nights at Sweetwater (Apex): Every Friday until Dec. 12, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Sweetwater Apex Event Lawn
Live music every Saturday (Holly Springs): Every Saturday starting Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., enjoy all sorts of live music while sipping on some unique beers at Bombshell Beer Company.
Five Points Fall Festival at Emmanuel Church: On Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m., check out the Emmanuel Baptist Church with the whole family for live music, trunk or treat and games.
Fall Music Series (Cary): Every Thursday until Oct. 30, join Crossroads Plaza at 2013 Crossroads Blvd in Cary for their free concert series from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Live at Lunch series (Cary): On Oct. 30, enjoy live music during your lunch in Downtown Cary Park.
Durham County
Beer Garden Concert Series (Durham): On Oct. 25 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Glass Jug RTP. This music festival series features a variety of local bands pulling from many genres to create themed festivals every month, highlighting different beverages, food trucks and music, along with other fun activities! Purchase a commemorative 22oz stadium cup for $5 and get draft beer refills at the 16oz price at all 8 of the Jam Session events!
Live concerts on Saturdays: Starting at 7:30 p.m. every Saturday, enjoy all sorts of folk and contemporary soft rock at the Sacred Grounds Coffeehouse in Durham.
Live Music Fridays: On Oct. 22, 24, 31 and Thanksgiving Eve, check out a wide variety of bands from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Growler Grlz taproom off Hope Valley Road.
