School is winding down for many kids around here and, for for some, summer has already started. And that means libraries are gearing up for another summer of programs designed to ensure that kids keep at least a few books in their hands in between camps and pool and summer break time.
No, they aren't like those pre-COVID programs where lots of us were gathering together for crafts or Harry Potter-themed game nights. But a lot of fun is planned. Libraries are offering programs for kids and adults. Here's what's planned.
Summer Reading; Wake County Public Libraries
With a Tails and Tales theme this summer, Wake County's libraries will be offering lots of book recommendations, along with scavenger hunts, puzzles, crafts and more. For each activity you complete, according to the county, you'll be in the running for various prizes. The program runs from June 14 to Aug. 14. Check the

Young Child: Ask your librarian about Play Your Way to K, a Kindergarten readiness game that incorporates talking, singing, reading, writing and playing toward a successful launch to kindergarten. Stop by any library to pick up a game board
School-Aged Kids: Pick up an Outdoor Adventure Journal filled with exciting activities to keep you reading, creating, exploring and discovering all summer long! From science experiments to outdoor games and crafts, you're sure to find your next great summer adventure. Visit the library to continue the fun and check out great books.
Teens: Looking for that next can’t-put-it-down, stay-up-all-night book? It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3! Just take the “Hook a Book Quiz,” and the library will match you up with some great new reads. Request the books online and pick them up at your local library when they’re ready. You can also test your problem-solving skills with three new thrilling virtual escape rooms.
Adults: Chat with librarians about great books to read, participate in virtual programs with local writers and more.
Summer Reading: Durham County Library
The Durham County Library's Summer of Learning runs from June 14 to July 30. It will be offering activities, prize drawings and lots of reasons to pick up a book. This year, kids, teens and adults can earn points by reading and completing various activities through virtual library programs or at home. Durham also is partnering with Book Harvest to provide free book bundles for preschoolers to tweens and free summer meals for anyone age 18 and under.

Summer Reading: Chapel Hill Public Library
Chapel Hill Public Library also will host a summer reading program. Participants are encouraged to register online, pick up a reading calendar and keep track of their reading. At the end of the summer, participants can pick up a free book. Details are on the

Summer Reading: Orange County Public Library
The county library system has programs for young children to adults. It includes summer craft kits for teens and adults. Check
the website for details.

The pizza chain is offering
Camp BOOK IT to encourage summer reading. When kids meet their monthly reading goal in June, July and August, they'll get a free one-topping personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.
