Libraries kick off summer reading programs

Get your kids reading this summer in one of the many summer reading programs at libraries across the region.

Local libraries are gearing up for their summer-long reading programs that aim to keep kids reading all summer.

The program, for babies to teens, requires kids to read or be read to for a certain amount of time each week. There are often regular events, prizes and giveaways all summer. And best of all, it's free.

Libraries across the country work together to provide the program at as little cost as possible. This year, that consortium has selected a water theme for the programs. So get ready for a lot of references to making waves and splashes by reading.
